What was your first job in the construction industry?

I started my Cadetship at Multiplex as a member of the Estimating team, where I was involved in several project tenders. It couldn’t have been more suitable timing to complete this sector of the rotation program as I had recently commenced my Masters in Construction Management and was undertaking a range of cost planning subjects. Work and study tied in very well. This parallel and comparable position is one of the great aspects of being a Cadet.

What has been your highlight so far working at Multiplex?

My highlight would definitely be working on and being a part of the team for two of Melbourne’s most impressive and iconic CBD buildings (Collins Square and 35 Spring St) and experiencing these buildings come to life from paper to a physical reality. One of the most rewarding parts of working in the construction industry for me is being able to see the actual progress, whether that be over the course of a day or two years.

What development opportunities have you been given in your role?

Throughout my role as a Cadet and Graduate I have been exposed to numerous development opportunities, which is a key value of the Multiplex cadet and graduate program. As a Cadet/Graduate the Multiplex management and HR teams ensure you are exposed to a variety of areas. To date, mine have included Safety, Defects, Estimating and Supervision whilst gathering insight into numerous other areas along the way. Throughout all of these areas I have built relationships with various parties involved in a project from client and consultants to subcontractors and your own team. In addition to these relationships you are exposed to challenges and responsibilities that test your skill set but more importantly advance and broaden your capabilities. Furthermore, Multiplex provide various training modules all of which have key learnings that apply to your everyday practice.

How would you describe the work environment in construction?

The construction industry is busy and at times quite intense and demanding. However, this energetic vibe is where I believe a lot of the passion for the built environment evolves from. Strong relationships and teams are made with all parties involved in a project and it’s this passion, commitment and team effort that results in the successful and iconic buildings/landmarks we see all over the world today.
